New Castle Historical Society’s Diamond Jubilee Exhibition

On view April 18 – July 4

Be part of the history happening today as the New Castle Historical Society celebrates our 60th anniversary with The Stories We Share, on view April 18 – July 4. Since this local milestone coincides with America’s semiquincentennial, this exhibition of rarely-exhibited objects from the NCHS collection showcases New Castle stories from the Revolutionary era to today.

Original letters, diaries, ledgers, photographs, paintings, and everyday objects of yesteryear fill the rooms of the Greeley House, itself an integral piece of local history dating back to the early 1850s and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One of the key objects in the exhibition is the 1903 Patriotic Quilt by Sarah Griffith, which features dozens of hand-stitched figures and scenes from American History. From the earliest Quaker families to settle in this area and the agricultural economy that sustained local residents for over a century, to the arrival of the train, industrialization, global wars, and the establishment of today’s suburban community, this exhibition traces the history of New Castle through its people.

The exhibition includes a scavenger hunt for families, encouraging young visitors to discover unique historical objects and stories from the past that connect to life today. There is also an activity room on the upper floor where visitors of all ages can reflect upon the stories in the exhibition and share their own.

We hope you will find reflections of yourself, your family, your friends, and your neighbors reflected in the stories we share!
