Darien
Life on the Sound
Darien sits on the rocky shoreline of the Long Island Sound between Stamford and Norwalk. Along the Post Road, a walkable downtown is being reshaped by development.
Farmers first cleared land here in the 1640s, and for nearly two centuries this was the Middlesex Parish of Stamford, whose meetinghouse of 1739 became today’s First Congregational Church. In 1820 the parish became its own town. Local lore says Assemblyman Thaddeus Bell wrote “Darien,” an old name for the Isthmus of Panama, onto the charter because he liked the sound of it.
The town remembers its past well. The 1778 Mather Homestead, raided by Tories during the Revolution, was the family home of Stephen Tyng Mather, the first director of the National Park Service, and is now a National Historic Landmark and museum.
